Chapter Thirteen
Sophia
Sophia secured her cell phone to her ear with her shoulder as she wiggled into her coat in the back seat of the sedan. “I promise to call, Lorie.”
“I mean it,” Lorie chided on the other end of the call, “I want to know every detail of that house. I looked it up online, and it’s gorgeous.”
“You looked up his house online?” Sophia asked. Although, she wasn’t entirely surprised by her friend’s actions.
“A 2.5-million-dollar mansion on the Bainbridge coast? You bet your bottom dollar I looked it up.”
Sophia scooted to the edge of her seat as the car came to a stop at the entrance to the ballpark. “Please, let me be surprised.”
“He could’ve had something bigger.”
“Lorie!” Sophia chided.
“I’m just saying, he could afford more than 2.5 million,” Lorie clarified.
“But he would have no need of it. He lives alone.”
“Ugh. You’re so practical it scares me.”
Sophia laughed at her friend. “But you love me anyway.”
“That I do, friend. Have a great day.”
“You too,” Sophia added before she disconnected the call and stepped out into the cold October day.
Cole strode toward her wearing a long-sleeve shirt beneath a short-sleeve baseball jersey that said Seattle in navy-blue script, and she opened her arms to him. She’d sent him a message that she was close by, and he’d offered to meet her at the entrance.
Cole had asked her to spend the day with him at his house, but when he’d told her he needed to make an appearance at the baseball games first, she’d asked if she could meet him there. She wanted to see this part of his life.
He wrapped her in a welcoming hug. “Hey, I’m glad you came. Let me show you around for just a bit, then we’ll head out.”
Children of all ages ran through the walkways between the fenced-in baseball fields, and each field was dotted with players. Parents sat here and there on bleachers, and the smell of dirt was replaced by hotdogs and nacho cheese as they walked past the concession stand.
“Look at all these kids. They’re having a blast,” Sophia remarked.
“For some of them, this is all they have to look forward to.” Cole reached for her hand as they walked. “There are varying degrees of players in the league. Some are here for fun, but some know this might be their only way to go to college. A few of them have bigger dreams of playing in the minor league.”
Shouts caught her attention from the field they passed. She watched as everyone jumped to their feet screaming and throwing their hands in the air while a runner pumped his arms as he bounded for the next base.
“Some of them are still learning how to be part of a team. It’s a skill I hope they’re paying attention to anyway. Most jobs require working well with others, and it’s good to know how to be an important part of something bigger than yourself.”
“You mean, some of them think they’re too big for the team?” she asked.
